Description
The area around Cuxac-Cabardès is criss-crossed by the River Dure, a watercourse that once powered many mills. As you follow this route, you’ll pass from one side of the river to the other, sometimes wooded, sometimes open with uninterrupted views of the Pyrenees. Passing through the lauzières (old stone quarries), you’ll find where the lauzes were extracted and used locally for roofing, interior courtyard design and vernacular heritage such as wash-houses, covered fountains, paved terraces, etc.
Cuxac-Cabardès, a semi-mountainous village, is served by narrow streets and vaulted passageways. Inevitably, the church of Saint-Cécile, set against ancient feudal walls, is a reminder of the village’s ancient past. On the outside wall of the building, there is a litre depicting the coat of arms of an illustrious person: the coat of arms of Guillaume Castanier d’Auriac, who had his heyday under Louis XIV and was formerly the owner of La Bonde, Manufacture Royale under Colbert.
