CHAPELLE NOTRE DAME DES AUZILS ET CIMETIÈRE MARIN
GRUISSAN
Last update 20/09/2024
Description
This monument was first mentioned in 1080 when it was a priory where monks gathered to pray. The chapel as we now know it was built in 1635. Fishermen made it their preferred place of pilgrimage on Pentecost Monday. Visible from a long way off shore, “Notre-Dame du Bon Secours” watched over them during the maritime journeys. From the 19th century, cenotaph (tombs without bodies) were erected along the road leading to the chapel, making it one of the most picturesque marine cemeteries on the coast, surrounded by the lush landscape of La Clape.
