Description

Historical Natural Cultural

From Pradelles-Cabardès, you can climb to the Pic de Nore, the highest point in the Montagne Noire (1,211 m).

All around the village, you’ll find a number of original buildings. In the 19th century, Pradelles-Cabardès lived through the winter in cold and isolation. Layer after layer of snow covered the plateau.

Many of them built watertight underground silos to store the snow collected by the men and women of the village for several months. Ambitious, courageous and enterprising, a handful of them marketed the snow-ice from Pradelles-Cabardès and delivered it to the plains and the coast, while providing employment for the people of Pradelles. The ‘inexhaustible glaciers of the Montagne Noire’, the slogan used by the sellers, put this small village in the heart of France on the map, and it became a producer of natural ice for all the shops and users in a vast surrounding area, and more than that, all the way to the Mediterranean coast!

Five discovery panels punctuate the tour, covering a range of environmental themes and focusing on the history of Montagne Noire ice cream.
