Description

A strategic site, perched at 697-metres on Mount Ardu, Château de Puilaurens stands on a rocky spur overlooking the village surrounded by a forest of firs. France’s southernmost fortress prevented access to the Fenouillèdes for 4 centuries. It is a unique example of fortifications commanded by a central stronghold, the Cité de Carcassonne to defend a territory and the border with the kingdom of Aragon in the 13th century. The construction of the fortress on this steep site demonstrates great architectural prowess. It is an impressive visual landmark in a remarkable and preserved landscape.
The first stones can be seen from the entrance! At the end of the path stands an impressive winding staircase, then the entrance door to the castle. After passing the murder hole, the main courtyard is revealed The surrounding wall with niches and towers open over the gorge are steeped in history.
Last admission 20 minutes before closing.
