CHÂTEAU DE TERMES
TERMES
Last update 6/11/2024
Description
Overlooking the Termenet gorges and the picturesque village, the Château de Termes is famous for the long siege in 1210 during the Albigensian Crusade. This seigneury headquarters taken by Cathar heresy then provided intense resistance to Simon de Montfort for almost 4 months. This event features regularly during the tour.
Termes was also one of the “5 sons of Carcassonne” – the strategic fortresses that protected the kingdom of France. Deliberately destroyed in 1654, the castle now benefits from annual excavations and restoration works that make it an ever more imposing site. Exhibition and short film at reception in the village. 15-minute walk to access the monument with illustrated guidebook. View over the gorges and Hautes-Corbières.
Closed in December, January and February (except for groups).
